About the name

Spinster Abbott's is named after Lucy Abbott, an impressive young woman who in the 1800s broke with convention and blazed her own trail. She never married, and instead began buying up land on her own and built over 100 houses in the area. The ne ighborhood where Spinster Abbott’s is located is named after her as the Abbott Tract. The Spinster Abbott apartment is likely in one of the houses she built.

THE BODEGA

Need a quick grocery run? We’ve got you covered!
The bodega is stocked with local staples and more. Local produce – check. Bread, eggs, meat, and dairy – check. Dry goods – check. Household items and toiletries – check!

About the building

The bodega and bar opening next door to the apartment is located in a building constructed in 1945 as an Indian River Fruit stand. You can still see the old sign! Since then it has also been a glass blowing studio, a gallery, and a model car store.

Renovations in this unique little building are designed to bring back its funky Old Florida charm!

THE TAPROOM

The perfect pairing: The hot Florida sun and a cold Florida beer. Choose from our large selection of Sunshine State brews, regional beers, or a few features from places as far-flung as Anchorage, Alaska, and then grab a comfy seat in the Florida room.

Finding Home Near and Far

Founder Liz Snyder grew up a Florida lake rat – racing down limestone roads with her cousins to grab a Slush Puppy at the local jiffy store, shining for alligators late at night, and running up to the lakehouse at the sound of a triangle dinner bell for southern-style potlucks with her sprawling extended family. At the lake, home was defined by the gleam of the morning sun off the glassy lake, the sound of the screen door scraping the porch and slamming shut, and the taste of fresh-picked figs eaten from sap-sticky fingers.

Liz soon began exploring other places to call home, eventually landing in Alaska for 13 wild and delicious years with her husband and two boys. Here, the feel of home took on new sights, sounds, and flavors, but what didn’t change was Liz’s love of a crowded table and stories told over the clanging of forks and popping of corks.

So, when Florida finally called her back home, Liz knew she needed a way to keep local food, family, and community at the forefront – and thus, Spinster Abbott’s was born. Drawing inspiration from the building’s origins as an Indian River Fruit Stand, Spinster Abbott’s is designed to embrace welcoming old Florida vibes through locally-grown and -made food and drink, beautiful and southern-sourced bodega inventory, and an atmosphere inspired by memories made at the beach, the lake, and the trips in between.

Spinster Abbott’s is where anyone can come to find home in good food, comforting essentials, and a full glass.
